What do you call music that weaves together instrumental with a capella, Sanskrit with Native American with jazz? The music of Zoey Wren has an eco-spiritual flavour and a tone that might be best expressed as “inspirational fusion.” Imagine Keith Jarrett meets Walela meets Loreena McKennitt.

This burgeoning composer and singer grew up in the Kootenay mountains of British Columbia. As a teen she studied classical piano, wrote pop songs and etudes for concert band, and then went on to train in music composition at McGill University. After graduating from McGill, Zoey spent a decade pursuing the field of alternative healing. Realizing that music was her true calling, Zoey returned to study jazz at Vancouver Community College in 2004. Now living in Port Moody, Zoey has released a sumptuous debut vocal album.

Make Me A River was recorded in the studio over a period of nine days in October 2009. Gathering a team of some of Vancouver’s best session players, Zoey brought forth songs written over a period of fifteen years. Make Me A River flows from dance to prayer, from longing to celebration, from piano to 7-piece ensemble. Acoustic instrumentation supports a strong and engaging vocal delivery. Zoey’s lyrics are rich in visuals of nature and reflections on what it means to be human.

Zoey performs at house concerts, farmer’s markets, and cafes as well as hosting a regular Community Creativity Circle in Port Moody where people share their music, poetry, dance and art. Zoey also co-hosts a regular chant evening at Newport Yoga Studio. To inspire creativity and to facilitate group singing is a mission that Zoey pursues enthusiastically.

In 2003, the artist released a debut instrumental album called Light on the Water. A beautiful solo piano journey, Light on the Water is ideal for relaxation, yoga and meditation. This album has become the background to audio programs for tai chi, meditation, and self-development training. Zoey is currently at work on a third album, a collection of love songs that hone in on her gift as a pianist and will surely set the birds to singing!
